Summary

Award-winning filmmaker and performing artist Miranda July brings her extraordinary talents to the page in a startling, sexy, and tender collection。 In these stories, July gives the most seemingly insignificant moments a sly potency。 A benign encounter, a misunderstanding, a shy revelation can reconfigure the world。 Her characters engage awkwardly -- they are sometimes too remote, sometimes too intimate。 With great compassion and generosity, July reveals their idiosyncrasies and the odd logic and longing that govern their lives。

No One Belongs Here More Than You is a stunning debut, the work of a writer with a spectacularly original and compelling voice。

Some stories were a one or two, some were a three or four… sometimes I had to keep reading just to see what she was getting at, but if it wasn’t for that curiosity I would’ve given it a 2 rather than a 3 overall… maybe I’m just not that into weird short stories (are short stories always weird?)

Some of these were good and some of these were bad。

“We had loved people we really shouldn’t have loved and then married other people in order to forget our impossible loves, or we had once called out hello into the cauldron of the world and then run away before anyone could respond。” What a bizarre little book this was, filled with unique and unpredictable tales, told by characters brimming with raw misery。 At no point of the book could I predict what the narrator was going to say next, and several times I was surprised with the statements made。 “We had loved people we really shouldn’t have loved and then married other people in order to forget our impossible loves, or we had once called out hello into the cauldron of the world and then run away before anyone could respond。” What a bizarre little book this was, filled with unique and unpredictable tales, told by characters brimming with raw misery。 At no point of the book could I predict what the narrator was going to say next, and several times I was surprised with the statements made。 Not necessarily "pleasantly" surprised either, but it was an experience that I won't forget。The reviews under this book wasn't the best and I can completely see why。 But I still read it because someone who shares the same reading taste as mine spoke highly of it。 I don't regret it at all。 Something about human misery and insanity being put down into strings of words has always fascinated me, and Miranda July's “No One Belongs Here More Than You” really does that。 I suppose the title of the book directly speaks to me, because I am probably one of her target audience。 There were a lot of "disturbing" topics that came up in the book, which is what I assumed put off many people。 For some reason they didn't bother me that much, because I couldn't take the technical aspects of this book seriously。 I was more focused on the flow of words, the string of thoughts, the fast-paced narration laced with stone-cold sadness。 Something about this truly captivating。 I really couldn't stop reading it。 But it's not something I would recommend to someone unless I am 100% sure their reading taste will align with it。“In the powdery warmth of the bathroom I felt euphoric。 Being alonesuddenly felt wild。 I locked the door and made a series of involuntary, baroque gestures in the mirror。 I waved maniacally at myself and contorted my face into hideous, unlovable expressions。 I washed my hands as if they were children, cradling one and then the other。 I was experiencing a paroxysm of selfhood。” 。。。more

„You seem incredibly faraway to me, like someone on the other side of a lake。 A dot so small that it isn’t male or female or young or old; it is just smiling。”

I found myself, after the first couple of stories, getting really immersed Her style of writing took a while to get into, but then I really enjoyed the characters There was not much fun in their lives, though, and as I'm currently at a lonely time, they did little to cheer me I found myself, after the first couple of stories, getting really immersed Her style of writing took a while to get into, but then I really enjoyed the characters There was not much fun in their lives, though, and as I'm currently at a lonely time, they did little to cheer me 。。。more

Of the stories themselves, perhaps only two are worthy of four stars。 But all together, the book is damn fine。 Great sentences。 I like how she thinks。

Never read a whole book of short stories before。 4 stars for this book because some of stories actually made me laugh out loud and would recommend this

Ogden Nesmer

brilliantly written, everything is intensely personal and fascinating in each of these stories that come together to create something very weird and fun。

Fun。 Writing has that automatic feeling w/ constant little divergences。 Style/themes generally what I like。Reminded me of other stories。 Swim Team - felt like a moshfegh story w/ an independent woman in a weird place doing a kind of bizarre thing with some strange peopleMon Plaisir - reminded me of DFW's Adult World (1) sort of although with a different ending, experiencing your relationship from a different angle。 / A Temporary Matter from interpreter of maladies。 The Moves - Sticks from Tenth Fun。 Writing has that automatic feeling w/ constant little divergences。 Style/themes generally what I like。Reminded me of other stories。 Swim Team - felt like a moshfegh story w/ an independent woman in a weird place doing a kind of bizarre thing with some strange peopleMon Plaisir - reminded me of DFW's Adult World (1) sort of although with a different ending, experiencing your relationship from a different angle。 / A Temporary Matter from interpreter of maladies。 The Moves - Sticks from Tenth of December, short bizarre reminiscing about a father。Liked The Boy from Lam Kien 。。。more

This book left me confused。 It is a collection of short stories, all of them with a bizarre twist。 Didn’t enjoy all of them, but it was intriguing enough to continue reading。 Same category as the movie “The Lobster”。

so many lines were so beautiful that it was scary。 i had to close the cover and lay down and stare at the wall。

I liked some of the short stories contained in the book, however in the middle it felt as though it kept repeating the same moral。 I really believe that I was not the right audience for this book, and it took quite a bit of effort for me to finish it。 There are parts in some of these stories that feel like something out of a fever dream。 Some of them are quite interesting, and it’s great to see the details of the human phyche。 However, the amount of paedophilic relationships start is quite high I liked some of the short stories contained in the book, however in the middle it felt as though it kept repeating the same moral。 I really believe that I was not the right audience for this book, and it took quite a bit of effort for me to finish it。 There are parts in some of these stories that feel like something out of a fever dream。 Some of them are quite interesting, and it’s great to see the details of the human phyche。 However, the amount of paedophilic relationships start is quite high and it’s quite uncomfortable。 。。。more

Se convirtio en uno de mis libros favoritos sin dudas💗

I only read three stories so my 3。5★ rating is based on my opinion of them。The Man on The Stairs is my favorite。

Natalie

I just kind of hate when authors try to be ~bold~ and ~quirky~ and write stories for the sole purpose of making their audience uncomfortable。 At least have a decent plot。

I found this book on a stoop in Park Slope years ago, offered free to a good home。 This feels like the most appropriate way for it to have come into my life。 I knew of Miranda July from her film, and this collection of short stories had the same sort of dreamlike quality。 Lusty and curious。 Beautifully written, and all a bit sad。

<3 <3 <3 everyone should read this。 July so eloquently and disturbingly captures the everyday violence of womanhood, and also personhood。。。 ALSO the short story format is SO satisfying because it reflects precisely this window-shopping of peoples' lives, and also satisfies the immediate urge to read another story once you've finished the one before。 <3 <3 <3 everyone should read this。 July so eloquently and disturbingly captures the everyday violence of womanhood, and also personhood。。。 ALSO the short story format is SO satisfying because it reflects precisely this window-shopping of peoples' lives, and also satisfies the immediate urge to read another story once you've finished the one before。 。。。more

I loved the first few stories, but the hints of weirdness in the stories grew into blatant strangeness that prevented me from connecting with the text。 Miranda writes beautifully and I think she has a lot to say, but the bizarre premises distracted me from the depth the stories might have。
